COVID-19 Update (March 27, 2020)

We are truly living in unique times. The coronavirus pandemic is impacting everyone from our families, to businesses, and to our medical health professionals who continue to work tirelessly on the front lines to keep us safe. As the situation continues to affect our world, we need to implement tighter regulations so we can continue to care for your fur-family and food producing animals.

The health of our clients, staff, and patients is of the utmost importance. On March 27, the Alberta Government deemed veterinary medical services essential to protect the health and welfare of animals, thus we will continue to provide veterinary care at this time. Please note that treating ill or injured patients will be prioritized, and some routine procedures may be postponed.

For clients that have recently returned from travel outside of Canada, are feeling ill or exhibiting signs of respiratory illness, or have been in contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 we ask that you refrain from attending the veterinary practice in-person.

*At this time, clients will be unable to accompany their pet into the clinic for examination. This mandate dramatically reduces the number of potential exposures to our staff allowing us to stay healthy and continue offering veterinary care. Our staff will be in touch with you by-phone to discuss your concerns and examination findings.

*We ask that you please call on arrival to the clinic to ensure we have a veterinarian ready for your pet’s examination or that your pick up order is ready to minimize traffic through our reception area.  For all dog food and prescription refills, you may call the clinic in advance and the item can be set-aside for you to pick up. Payment can be taken over the phone by VISA or MasterCard.

*As much as we have always believed in the importance and value of veterinary home visits, especially for euthanasias, it deeply saddens us to state that we will temporarily be suspending all future visits to the home for the protection of our staff. This excludes visitation to well-ventilated farms for large animal veterinary care.

*All small animal after-hours emergencies have been suspended indefinitely. Please call the 24-hour emergency clinic, Guardian Veterinary Centre at (780)426-5880. This mandate excludes on-farm large animal emergencies.

*Although we currently follow strict cleaning and sterilization regimens within the clinic, we have increased the frequency of these disinfection protocols in high traffic areas.

*Due to supply restrictions we are now only able to provide our clients with a ONE month food supply per pet.

According to the Canadian Veterinary Medical association “although data is still limited, the CFIA is not aware of any reports worldwide of any animal getting sick after exposure to a human case, despite the large outbreak in humans. To date, there have been no reports of livestock being infected or sick with COVID-19 virus anywhere. The current spread of COVID-19 is as a result of human to human transmission. According to the OIE, there is no evidence that pets play a role in transmitting the disease to humans. Scientists are still trying to understand if and how it affects animals. This is an area that continues to be studied.”

We are committed to continuing to provide the best possible care to our clients and patients. Please be patient as we navigate these difficult times to ensure the health and safety of our staff, clients, and families.

Sincerely,

The Tri-Municipal Veterinary Clinic Team
